Stepping aside from the philosophical part of this blog, let's get into some science. One thing that many of us have imagined is "What if I could change that?" such as an answer to a test question or preventing something, such as falling off a bike from happening. Usually, we get told (possibly by an adult) to not worry about the past and focus on the future. While this is true, is it our only choice?
Perhaps not. More and more people are coming up with ideas to travel back in time. One thought that the great physicist, Albert Einstein had, was that were you to travel faster than the speed of light, you would go backwards in time. How did he get this idea? As a kid, he would think what would happen if he rode a beam of light and as he grew older, he came up with many theories and backed them up with complex mathematical complications. But I don't necessarily agree with his statement about time travel. As far as I'm aware, his analogy is based on that similar to two cars travelling on a highway. When one passes the other (when car X moves faster than car Y), car Y seems as if it is moving backwards relative to car X. He connected this analogy to that of time, where if you were travelling in a spaceship and somehow managed to break the light barrier, you'd see things moving backwards.
Why do I not agree? Because of a very simple reason. Were you to travel as fast as the speed of light, you'd see everything stop, since you are travelling as fast as all photons, as if you yelled "Freeze!" and everything in the observable universe responded accordingly. But would you really have stopped time? Does light not travel in waves, meaning that it keeps moving in multiple dimensions? So you cannot simply add vectors. And were you to move as fast as the speed of light, you wouldn't necessarily see everything like a still picture, yet only pieces of that picture due to light not travelling in a completely straight line. Thus, pieces of the puzzle would be missing. Even so, let's assume that everything does stop were you to travel as fast as light does, this things would seem to move backwards if you moved faster than 2.99793 x 10⁸ m/sec. Would that really make you travel backwards in time?
No. Why not? Because, you would simply only see everything moving backwards. Would you be able to re-hear things, would the molecules of air bounce backwards again, would the chemical reactions that took place when you touched something and the senses were sent to your brain via electrical signals be reversed? No, how would they? In this case, only your sense of sight seems to go backwards, no other senses would logically be affected. Just because one car seems to move backwards, the dashboard or the seats in your car don't.
Because of the above, I don't think just by travelling faster than the speed of light would really make time go backwards.
But don't lose hope. There still are ways. For my idea to work, we need to think of what we live in as a fabric. What exactly do we live in? We're all accustomed to the three dimensions and time. If we add these two together, we get space-time. Think of this as a fabric. A fabric that moves, but not necessarily at a constant velocity. Unlike what Newton thought, space-time doesn't travel straight and with the same velocity like an arrow. It's more like a river. It bends and slows, wherever there is a high concentration of gravity.
With that in mind, we can move on to how we can go back in time. We can manipulate space-time. As we know, space-time bends when it goes past a very, very dense object (such as a black hole, a neutron star, or quasars). What if we were to bend space-time so much that it folds back onto itself? Like that of paper. We now can get to another places much faster, even the past. The fabric of space-time includes time, and if we can fold it onto itself, we can thus travel in time.
Great. How would we accomplish this? Obviously, we would need extremely heavy objects, magnitude of times heavier than Earth, or even the Sun. With today's technologies, that's simply impossible. But is it our only option? Perhaps not. Scientists have recently found out that we can bend space time with something that's very abundant. What is that something? Light. Photons are apparently very good at bending space-time.
Then, why is it that we don't see time-warps during the day and normal time during the night? In other words, if light is so good at bending light, why doesn't it slow the day down (since there is so much light during the day) and why do nights not appear any longer than days (since there isn't much light)? Because the photons are all moving in the same direction. They aren't "set up" to bend light in any way.
Disclaimer: the following idea in this paragraph is not mine. It is that of Dr. Ronald Mallett, a professional physicist. His idea is that, by using powerful lasers (meaning as hot as the centre of the Sun powerful), which are available with today's technology, and in doing so, he would arrange an array of these lasers, so that they form a spherical shape. Once this is accomplished, one can send particles in to the time machine, and since the particle already has some speed, added to that of the speed of light, it would seem to travel faster than the speed of light (from an outsider's reference plane) and thus, travel back in time. This is assuming that Einstein's theory about time-travel is correct. Yet, there is a major draw-back with this device. It only allows objects to travel back in time form the instant it was powered on. One cannot dwell more into the past using such a machine.
Perhaps we can do something different. Let us get back to travelling in time by using bending space-time. For this, we would need ample amounts of gravity, which are not readily available by today's standards. Yet, we can have other options.
If my research is correct, according to the String Theory, there are things inside quarks and leptons. These things are called strings. Such strings can be either: open (like a line) or closed (like a circle). These vibrating strings are the building block of all matter. How does that apply in this article? Because a portion of these enclosed strings are called gravitons, and as you can guess, they are responsible for gravity. How would we get our hands on gravitons? With improvements in nuclear technology. More specifically, improvements in particle accelerators. Once two atoms are smashed together at almost light speed, they literally break down, releasing quarks, leptons and gravitons. If we could somehow contain these gravitons in large amounts, we could potentially create mini-blackholes, and by arranging them in a specific manner, such as that of a twisting cylinder, we could cause such a bend in space-time that it folds onto itself and causes a wormhole, directing us to the past or perhaps even the future.
Although the above doesn't break the laws of physics (as far as I know), there are complications that arise. By doing so (ie, travelling back or forwards in time), would one be simply travelling in the same dimension as we are always in, the familiar one of space-time? If that were the case, then how come we have had no encounters of the future (do déja vu's count? Are they not just a mis-interpretation of the mind, placing things that we've actually already seen in the past and placing them in the present, making us think that we've already seen an event happening? That's basically the explanation for it at the moment.)? Perhaps there is something else that is happening. Since space-time is like a river, perhaps it forks (credit: Michio Kaku) and in doing so, creates multiple universes. Parallel universes, if you will. And in these parallel universes, we would have all the possible outcomes of any event. So, for example, if you were jay-walking and managed to get to the other side of the road without getting hit, you survived in our dimension, yet in another dimension, you got run over by a bus. And in another, an giant fish came and ate you. And so on and so forth. This is a possibility. So, perhaps we've all dealt with time-travel, but because it was in another universe, we are simply not aware of it. Perhaps, our other universe form tries to contact us and that is why we have déja vu's (I'm not satisfied with the given explanation at the moment.).
For the above two paragraphs to work, there needs to be ten to eleven dimensions, instead of only the 3 + 1 that we know of (space + time). This is one of the necessities of String Theory. Without it, the theory would not be valid. In such a case, there are seven or eight dimensions that we do not know of yet. Why is this? Perhaps because they're too small to observe. You see, String Theory contains within it a more specific theory by the name of M-Theory, which in short, states that our dimension (including our universe) was created by two branes (like membranes) colliding. These branes aren't completely parallel, so when one part of the branes met, it created our familiar space-time and caused the Big Bang, yet while far away, the same happened, other dimensions were formed. If this theory holds true, so does String Theory.
In the next paragraph, I propose how we can not only travel through time, but also to other dimensions using gravitons. So, in essence, if a graviton is released from an atom, it disappears. Why? No one is sure, but scientist speculate that due to its enclosed nature, it disappears into the fifth or possibly even higher dimensions. Now, once again, if we could contain these gravitons and manipulate them so that once they open up the portal to the other dimensions, we can ride them to other dimensions and discover new things. Perhaps it would not be wise to send humans to other dimensions, for who knows what can happen and what lives there, but perhaps robots or cameras, something that can send us information back.
Perhaps it would be wise to treat time as a dimension, rather than a separate thing. If we treat it as a completely separate thing, many complications arise and things get out of hand. If we do treat it as the fourth dimension, things would make much more sense. As always, let me know what you think in the comments below.
These ideas are simply just that, ideas. They are posted here to advance humankind's knowledge. If I was no longer able to carry out such ideas, perhaps someone else, out there in the world, reads this and becomes inspired and carries out these ideas. They pick up where I left off. As it has been viewed in the past and is still seen to this day, this is the best way that humanity advances. Were it not for this, we'd still be stuck in Cavemen times, because even though someone has a great idea, no one ever uses it and things keep returning to point zero, generation after generation. It's kind of like doing a burnout, it's cool, but you don't really get anywhere.
So, if we all just swallowed our pride and took into consideration that we are not the best thing on the planet, that others can have better ideas than we do, that we're not the smartest person in the world, maybe we'd get somewhere. We constantly think that we're somehow better than all the animals on this Earth. We think that holds true since we seem to be the smartest animal and just because we think that, we decide that we are God, deciding what lives on this planet and what doesn't. Don't believe me? Look at how many animals become extinct every hour, let alone every year. Due to human caused activities such as burning fossil fuels, not controlling our population and letting it grow exponentially out of hand, over-hunting and moving animals to places where they simply just don't belong, right now, we're facing the highest extinction rate this planet has ever seen. Before the industrial revolution, at the worst of times, the rate of extinction was 4-5 animals per year. Today, it's 21 animals per day. That's 7665 animals per year, 1533 times more than the natural rate of extinction.
Perhaps we need to realize that we're not God, that we're not the best thing on this Earth, just simply a part of it, that depends on every other part just as much as they depend on us. Like it or not, we're a family. This whole universe is, one way or another. Forget the universe, forget the Earth, all humans are at least family. We're all in this together. Then why do we have to fight and kill one another? Just because of power and greed? I'd much rather never become realized and be penniless than ever slaughter a person, let alone be the head of genocide in multiple countries while getting worthless pieces of paper after worthless pieces of paper from stealing diamonds, which at the end of the day, is just carbon. Is that really worth killing for? Is anything worth that? All for money? We really need to rethink our values if we want to stop this world becoming worse and wore daily. If you haven't realized it by now, we're getting closer to the apocalypse with every day. Not because of time passing by, but because of us passing by. Because of us not stopping and saying "Hey, what you're doing is wrong. I'm going to stop you." yet just watching and passing by. Because of our actions and the actions of others. We really, desperately need to see what we've become and control our actions. We need to stop ourselves from doing wrong first, and stop others from doing wrong second. We need to take action. Generations keep coming and going, still no change is seen. Generation after generation, child after child, father after father, we keep doing the same things. We're worried about the Third World War, but can't you see? The Third World War is already here. We're already fighting. It's no longer country against country, we're fighting within our country. We're fighting within ourselves. And it needs to stop. Immediately. It has to be us. It has to be this generation. We're out of time. We no longer can go on like this. Is this really why God put us here, to watch things go out of control? Things need to change. No more subliminal messaging, no more kids satisfying their need to be happy by kicking plastic, hollow balls around on dirt roads in developing countries while we get bombarded with ads and feel stressed because of school, while so many others can only wish to get an education. No more poverty and lack of healthcare on the other side of the world while we can't decide what to eat. No more not helping anyone out because we're too far to care, or because just us alone wouldn't make a difference. No more pretending like the globe isn't warming up, like we're not in knee-deep in trouble if we continue on like this, not just about the above mentioned, but about everything. No more lying to ourselves. No more selfishness. No more. Sure, we've improved on a lot of things, but that ratio to the ratio of the number of things that have gone horribly wrong is astoundingly off-balanced in favour of the latter, especially when we compare that with the past and see how much worse that ratio has really gotten. We simply cannot go on like we already have. We no longer got to do this, we have to do this.
In hopes of not just a mere future, but a bright one for all of us, this is Abteen, signing off.
wow abteen...EE much? wanna help me write mine? these are pretty exceptional ideas :)

ReplyDeleteOn a note, I'm pretty sure that M theory is just an extension of String theory and not the other way around =S
ReplyDeleteThat being said, great, intelligent and well thought out post.
About your last paragraph, I agree with a lot of it, that humans do need to start picking up our own weight instead of letting out planet drag it for us. But a few things open for discussion I suppose.
No animal on Earth can create a perfect environment, all organisms adapt to their environments. Except for humans, it is here, where humans are the exception, we change our environment to adapt to us better. This is what has allowed the human race to become so dominant. It is this, along with small things such as the development of our thumb as well as our social instincts that have brought us this far.
And this is the thing my friend, wars, disease, famine, they are all necessary. To create a healthy ecosystem, a healthy planet, the population of humans must also be controlled. and this sounds so inhumane, and it is. But it really is the truth, there are natural barriers for every organism on Earth that prevent it from over growing and exceeding the carrying capacity. These barriers exist for a reason, they are the balance of nature. They allow a sustainable planet.
In the case of humans, we change our environment, we eliminate these barriers that would normally control our population. Allowing us to grow so far above our carrying capacity. On top of this, humans are an invasive, destructive species. We destroy the environments we enter completely. This is why I feel Earth is doomed to an extent.
I realize how inhumane that sounds, it sounds almost as if I'm asking 4 billion humans to commit suicide. 4 Billion humans with lives, feelings, thoughts, minds, ideas and so on. I'm really not, I'm simply pointing out that this trait of our species has allowed us to create this devastation. We cannot completely over step it. We have exceeded our carrying capacity, and as long as are above it, we can change as much as we can to let our species live as long as possible, but as long as we are above our carrying capacity with us being a destructive species, the destruction of our planet is imminent and unstoppable.
